All unions in the Lagos State University (LASU) , Tuesday vowed that it would not allow the Vice Chancellor Professor John Obafunwa to step into the premises of the university again until the Lagos state government appoints a new acting Vice Chancellor.
The unions had on Monday thrown Professor Obafunwa out of the institution’s premises stating that they can no longer work with him as the Vice Chancellor of the university.
At an emergency congress held by the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) LASU chapter on Tuesday at the campus, stated that the VC cannot enter the campus again, that whoever is appointed to be acting as the Vice Chancellor must address the lingering victimization of members vis-à-vis withdrawal of certificates.
The union also said the arrears of emolument must be paid before 4pm on Wednesday , stressing that the union does not want Professor Obafunwa to complete his term that the state government should appoint an acting VC for peace to reign in the 30 years old institution.
The union also stated that the VC refused to put in place a budget monitoring committee that this must be done immediately.
Speaking at the congress, Vice Chairman of ASUU, Dr. Isaac Oyewumi said it appears that LASU is the only university in Nigeria that has not met the 2012 agreement, adding that the 2012 miscellaneous terms must be implemented.
The Chairman of the union, Dr. Adekunle Idris stated that after the workers marched Professor Obafunwa to the gate and out of the campus, the angry mob shouted that the next person to be dealt with is the Director, External Services, Professor Abanikanda that they vowed to strip him naked but that it took the intervention of executives of the unions that such cannot be done in an academic environment.
He added that it also took the prompt intervention of the executives to save the VC from being lynched.
However, with all these happenings on campus, the convocation lecture that was supposed to be held on Tuesday to be delivered by the former Vice Chancellor of University of Ilorin (UNILORIN), Professor Ishaq Oloyede could not hold.
