Twist As Real Mother Of Ekiti Protest Victim Surfaces, Exonerates Lawmaker

Apeke Olaya, who introduced herself as the mother of Modupe Taiwo, killed on Tuesday during the anti-impeachment protest in Ekiti State is not his mother. Rather, Deborah Akinyemi on Friday said she is the real mother of Taiwo. Akinyemi said Olaya was just Taiwo’s aunt. Akinyemi told journalists at Efon Alaaye, Efon Alaaye Local Government Area of the state on Friday that Olaya was an aunt of the deceased and not the mother as she claimed. Olaya, who wept uncontrollably at the Government House Ado Ekiti on Wednesday, had told journalists that she was the mother of the deceased. It will be recalled that during the wild anti-impeachment protest by supporters of Ekiti State Governor, Ayodele Fayose, Taiwo was allegedly killed by gunshot. Olaya had also mentioned Hon. Gabriel Ogundele, a member of the Ekiti State House of Assembly, as the alleged killer. But Akinyemi punctured Olaya’s claim. She said she did not know who killed her son. While exonerating Ogundele as the alleged killer of the deceased, she said Olaya, whom she described as a member of the Peoples Democratic Party, spoke with journalists without informing the family. Akinyemi said: “I don’t know who killed my son. “I don’t know. “I can’t say. “They were saying it was one lawmaker that killed my son. “How can that be? “I last saw him (the deceased) two days before his death. “He was born in May 1982 as the fourth born. “His colleagues said he was among those protesting. “The woman that came to the Government House was just his aunt. “I’m his true mother. “She (Mrs. Olaya) went there without the knowledge of the family.” Akinyemi said she had the deceased from her first marriage before his father was killed during a political violence involving members of the National Party of Nigeria and Unity Party of Nigeria. She added: “I was shocked when the woman came to tell me she had gone to claim she was the mother. “She didn’t bring anything to me, but I know she is a member of the PDP. “I have not seen his corpse since then. “My son is irreplaceable. “There is nothing as a poor widow I can do, but I have left vengeance for God.”
