Real Madrid close in on Ajax's record

A lot has been said ofReal Madrid'srecord-breaking run of results which currently stands at 21 straight competitive wins. According to the Guinness Book of Records, the record for straight wins is currently held by Brazilian side Curitiba, who notched up 24 in 2011.

However, that is not the record to beat. Johan Cruyff's 1971-72 Ajax team, which also included Neeskens and Johnny Rep in its ranks, racked up 26 consecutive wins between the league, the cup and the European Cup.
That is the record thatAncelotti'slads should be aiming for. It was set during the modern era and is comparable in terms of standard and number of competitions to the current game. Ajax strung together 19 straight wins in the Dutch Eredivisie, three in the cup and four in the European Cup, which they went on to win.
German side Dresden also put together a 26-game winning streak during the 1942/43 campaign. That included 23 league games - Dresden won every game they played - and three cup games.
There are other records, but these pale in comparison. For example, Eusebio's Benfica's 29 straight wins. It was set between 1971 and 1973 but only includes games played in the Portuguese league: six during the 1971/72 campaign and 23 during the 1972/73 season. However, amongst those league wins, the Portuguese side lost European Cup games against Malmo and Derby County.
