The winner of the 2013 Ballon d'Or hopes to repeat the success of that year. And his 61 goals from 60 games in 2014 stand him in very good stead. As does his winning the Champions League, Club World Cup, European Super Cup and Copa del Rey trophies with Real Madrid - the only downside being Portugal's poor performance during the Brazilian World Cup.
The Argentine striker has previously won the Ballon d'Or on four occasions and has been nominated again, despite the fact that he failed to win a single trophy with Barça in 2014. He finished runner-up with Argentina in the last World Cup and also picked up FIFA's Golden Ball award.
Considered by many to be the best goalkeeper in the world, this is the first time since 1963 that a goalkeeper stands a chance of winning. His incredible performance in the Brazilian World Cup, during which he helped Germany lift the trophy with some stunning saves, could work in his favour.
