La liga - January packs a Real punch for Real Madrid

January packs a Real punch

Real Madrid are knuckling down to work on preparing for their January marathon as they head into one of the periods on their fixture list that poses the greatest challenge to Carlo Ancelotti and his crew.
'Los Blancos' kick off their 2015 campaign at the Mestalla, a match which marks the start of as many as nine games, if they knock Atlético out of the Copa del Rey, over the course of just 27 days, a schedule which serves up an extremely demanding encounter every three days.
Ancelotti has been focused on the first two games of the year, both away trips, for a good while now. The visits to the Mestalla, in La Liga, and the Calderón in the Copa, will test Real Madrid's mettle after 20 days in which there has been scant opportunity to get in any training of value.
The coaching staff believe a strong performance in these two games is vital for the team to continue their current form and avoid the classic questions that come as a result of any kind of slip-up, such as the friendly defeat to AC Milan in Dubai. 'Los Blancos' are also keen to prolong their winning streak in competitive matches, which currently stands at 22 victories after their last two wins in Morocco.
Although winning the Champions League still remains the major objective for the season, Real Madrid are gunning for success in all tournaments and January is decisive for both La Liga and the Copa del Rey. In the league, 'Los Blancos' want to take advantage of Barça-Atlético on 11th January to extend their lead. And, in the Copa del Rey, the 'Rojiblancos' and 'Azulgranas' are the obstacles standing in the way of their reaching the semi-finals, scheduled for February.
